- CO2 or carbon dioxide (also known as carbon dioxide, carbonic anhydride, carbon dioxide) is a compound that, under normal conditions, is a gas in the Earth's atmosphere, consisting of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. As a widely known chemical compound, it is frequently referred to by its chemical formula as CO2. In its solid form, it is called dry ice.

CO2 is obtained from a variety of sources, including gases released from volcanoes, combustion products of organic compounds, and respiration by aerobic organisms.

It is also produced by some microorganisms from fermentation and cellular respiration. Plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, and use both carbon and oxygen to make carbohydrates. In addition, plants also release oxygen back into the atmosphere, this oxygen will be used by heterotrophic organisms during respiration, forming a cycle.

- It is present in the Earth's atmosphere in low concentrations and acts as a greenhouse gas. It is a key component in the carbon cycle.

CO2 is a colorless gas that, when inhaled in high concentrations (dangerous because it is associated with suffocation risks) produces a sour taste in the mouth and a stinging sensation in the nose and throat. These effects are due to gas dissolving in mucous membranes and saliva, creating a weak solution of carbonic acid.

- Its specific gravity at 25 °C is 1.98 kg/m3, about 1.5 times heavier than air. The carbon dioxide molecule (O=C=O) contains two double bonds and has a linear shape. It has no electric dipole. Since it is a fully oxidized compound, it is chemically inactive and specifically non-flammable.

- At temperatures below -78 °C, carbon dioxide condenses into white crystals called dry ice. Liquid carbon dioxide is only generated under pressures above 5.1bar; At atmospheric pressure, it transitions directly from gaseous to solid phases or vice versa by a process called sublimation.

- Water will absorb a certain amount of carbon dioxide, and more than this when the gas is compressed. About 1% of dissolved carbon dioxide is converted to carbonic acid. Carbonic acid partially dissociates into bicarbonate (HCO3-) and carbonate (CO3-2) ions.

Liquid and solid CO2 are important refrigerants, especially in the food industry, where they are involved in the storage and transportation of ice creams and frozen foods.

- Used to produce carbonated soft drinks and sodas. Traditionally, the carbonation in beer and sparkling wine has been achieved by natural fermentation, but some manufacturers carbonate these beverages artificially.

Used as an inexpensive, non-flammable pressurized gas. Life jackets typically contain small canisters of carbon dioxide that are compressed to quickly inflate. Bottles of compressed carbon dioxide are also sold to supply compressed air for air guns, paintballs, bicycle tire pumps, as well as for the production of mineral water.

- CO2 used in firefighting, especially those designed to extinguish electrical fires, contains compressed liquid CO2.

- Used as a gas medium for welding technology such as MIG welding, etc., widely applied today in the shipbuilding industry and mechanical engineering processing.

- In the pharmaceutical industry and some other chemical processing industries because it is a less toxic substitute for traditional solvents such as organic chlorides. Applied in pharmaceutical extraction technology, using supercritical pressure to produce and refine essential oils for medicine.

- In medicine, up to 5% CO2 is added to pure oxygen to aid breathing after cessation of breathing and to stabilize the O2/CO2 balance in the blood.

A common form of industrial gas laser is the carbon dioxide laser, which uses carbon dioxide as the medium.

- Used in oil exploitation, oil well. It acts as a compressive agent and when dissolved in the crude oil underground, it significantly reduces the viscosity of the crude oil, allowing the oil to flow faster underground into the suction wells.
